Marcia L. Mckenna is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) of Toronto, with an A.R.C.T in piano teaching. She is the founder of Silk Water Publishing and the primary composer of the music listed on this website.
At the RCM, Marcia studied piano with Daryl Irvine and theory with James Lawless – both renowned pedagogues, RCM examiners, and adjudicators.
Prior to attending the RCM, Marcia studied music at Cambrian College of Applied Arts and Technology with the internationally known teacher and performer Paul Van Ness.
Marcia taught piano and music theory at Cosmo School of Music from 1988 to 1995, in Richmond Hill and Scarborough, Ontario; and also taught piano privately at home from 1980 to 1996.
Prior to teaching professionally, Marcia performed classical music as a piano accompanist for student recitals, exams, and auditions at the University of Toronto; and also played the organ in a dance band for weddings, anniversaries, and other social functions.
Marcia started composing music in 1970, with her first composition “Jazz, Jazz”, which is expected to be published in 2018. Her musical works include classical piano solo pieces and songs in various musical styles, with elements of classical, pop, folk, and jazz.
“As a teenager, I enjoyed browsing through the sheet music section of the local music store in the town of Amherst, Nova Scotia, and was thrilled when I came across pieces of music that had interesting lyrics and appealing arrangements.
I spent hours at the piano reading through the music and enjoying the discovery of songs that I had never heard before. I went from one song to another in an attempt to express all the various emotions that I felt during those years.
It was a wonderful outlet for me and immensely improved my piano sight-reading abilities, which carried over into my musical career and continued to provide a means of expression and entertainment throughout my life. I hope that my music will do the same for others.”
Enjoy the music!
